PART of one of the region's most famous cathedrals has been sealed off to the public after pieces of stone collapsed to the ground.

Several fragments of masonry at York Minster fell as tourists walked around the choir area below, it was confirmed yesterday.

No one was hit and the area was immediately cleared and scaffolding erected to allow stonemasons to examine the cause of the problem.

Minster spokesman Peter Lyddon said the incident happened at 9.50am on Monday and scaffolding had only just been completed so that investigations could begin.

He said that Evensong, which normally takes place in the Choir, had been transferred to the Nave.
