Brewers Scottish & Newcastle is set to launch a £600 million takeover bid for lager giant Beck's.
S&N is Beck's sole distributor in the UK and has emerged as favourite to buy the operation, reported the Financial Times.
But it could face competition for the privately-owned German firm from Belgium's Interbrew and US-based Anheuser Busch.
