ProposalS for an athletics training ground in east Cleveland have been unveiled.

The £400,000 scheme is the brainchild of the East Cleveland Athletic Track Association, formed by New Marske Harriers Athletics Club, Redcar Running Club, Loftus Athletics Club, Redcar and Cleveland Schools Athletic Association and Cleveland Orienteering Klub.

The proposed home for the facility is a former landfill site at Hob Hill, Saltburn.

The group is being helped by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to bid for National Lottery money. It has also secured match-funding for the proposal from local businesses.

It would involve a six-lane track for 110m and 110m hurdles, a four-lane track for 200m, and two lanes for 400m.

There will be a high jump area, which will be capable of supporting court games such as netball, basketball and volleyball, and an area for practising throwing the javelin.

There will be a shot putt area, pole vault, hammer and discus area, and a long jump and triple jump sand pit.

The facility would provide training and competition opportunities for local clubs, schools and the public, in athletics and team sports, such as rugby and football.

The scheme meets national guidelines for developing athletics with young people.

Graham Hall, of New Marske Harriers Athletics Club, said the development was exciting.

"It has been a marathon effort," he said. "It has been going on for 15 years now, and we are in the final straight.

"There is nothing else in the whole of Redcar and Cleveland, so it can't help but make a major impact."

The plan will be discussed by Redcar and Cleveland council's planning committee on Wednesday, August 8.
