Darlington town centre could be transformed into a no-go area for buses and taxis under new plans.

The proposals, which have been drawn up by specialist consultants for Darlington Borough Council, are aimed at revitalising the town by making it an attractive place to visit.

They include turning a large part of the town centre into a pedestrianised shopping area, free from buses, cars and taxis.

Transport policy manager for the council Ann Carruthers said: "We want to make the town better for outsiders as well as those in the town."

The consultation process started in January when five ideas for improving the town centre were put to the public.

These have since been reduced to two ideas, on which people are invited to have their say.

The first phase of the work would involve small-scale improvements such as pedestrian crossings on Prebend Row, and making sure former roads such as High Row look more attractive for pedestrians.

The second phase, which would involve consultation with various groups, could result in the town centre being made pedestrian-only during shopping hours.

This would affect the town from the Northgate and Crown Street junction southwards to Prebend Row, including the Bondgate junction.

Ms Carruthers said: "There is a lot to discuss, such as disabled access to the town, and what would happen to taxis and buses.

"We got a lot of positive feedback at the last consultation meeting, and we hope to receive a similar response tonight.

"Obviously, people living in the town may think of things we have not considered."

Anyone who would like to comment on the proposals is invited to a meeting today, which is being held at the Dolphin Centre, from 5.30pm.
