Hartlepool Burn Harriers - On Saturday seven of the club's younger athletes were called upon to represent Durham at the 'Clubs For Young People National Champs', in Newport, Wales.

The club's athletes certainly played their part, bringing home 16 medals between them and scoring vital points for the team.

The best performance came in the Under-17 age group from Adam Robson who took gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. This was his second busy weekend in a row, having competed in the English Schools Finals at Exeter the week previous.

Another top performer was Steve Bake who won a gold in the shot and the discus and also a silver in the javelin.

Other medalists were Daryn Jackson (Under-13s) who won a bronze in the 200m and another bronze in the 4x100m relay.

Nina Turnbull (Under-17) took silvers in the 200m and 4x100m relay and a bronze in the 100m.

Tony McConnell (Under-17) just missed a medal in the 400m by finishing fourth, but helped the relay team to a gold with a brilliant last leg.

Junior man Chris Ferguson took bronze in the 100m and silver in the relay, and fellow junior Steve Litherland had a busy day by taking bronze in the long jump, silver in the relay and finishing fourth in the 200m.

Newton Aycliffe

The Croft road race and fun run turned out to be a highly successful evening for the club.

The 2k fun run was won by Mathew Bell in 6 minutes 4 seconds, which also helped Aycliffe take the team award, ably assisted by the improving Adam Gibson in third place (6mins 35 secs) and the outstanding Michael Rippon in fifth (6mins 51secs).

The senior race, consisting of three laps around the race circuit run over the 10k distance, saw Peter Milburn produce one of his best times to take sixth place in 35mins. Sue Milburn was the club's next counter as first lady vet in 41mins for 38th place.

John Burnside managed an excellent 41 mins (41st), with Mick Beadle 44 mins (54th), Dave McKenzie running a personal best of 46mins4 secs for 62nd, ahead of Jed Hodgson in 68th for 47 mins, Pat Edwards managing 48 mins and 72nd, Rachel Scholey 76th, Karen Newbould 79th and Karen Collinson 86th.

The Tynedale 10k race saw a field of nearly 600 runners with Newton Aycliffe's only representative being Peter Towler as 11th O-55 to take 310th place in an excellent time of 46 mins.

Darlington Harriers and AC

The second running of the Pitstop 10km race at Croft Circuit took place on July 11, organised by Darlington Harriers and sponsored by Harrisons of Stockton.

The race was won by Rob Holladay of Morpeth Harriers in a course record of 32.36, the women's race was won by Alison Raw, also a course record.

The women's team of Alison Raw, Sharon Carbert and Phillipa Smith won the female team prize while the male team prize was won by Richmond and Zetland.

In the 2km Fun Run won by Newton Aycliffe's Mathew Bell in a time of 6.04 while Sophic Weddel was first Harrier home in seventh place in a time of 7.24.

Luis Robinson: Long Jump 2nd 4m.5 1, High Jump 1st 1m.55 Grade 3, 800m. 2nd 2min.23.5 Grade 4.

Under-17s: Kevin Archbold 200m 2nd 25.6, Long Jump 1st 5mt.27, 100m 3rd 12.5.

Shildon R and AC

Khalil Thompson represented County Durham in the finals of the National Association of Clubs for Young People and Field Championships held in Newport, South Wales on Saturday.

In the Under-13s, 1500 metres Khalil competed fiercely against a strong field, finishing second in a time of 4.85.2. The winner, representing Wales, was James Fareli in 4.56.5 and third was R Hughes of Berkshire 4.59.2.

Other strong teams included London, Nottingham, Essex, Middlesex and Northumberland.

Evenwood Road Runners

Twelve junior members came away from the Newton Aycliffe 3km road race with two items of silverware and the excellent performances continued.

Sarah Douthwaite was first girl 10 and Toni Ord second girl, therefore, both earned well-deserved trophies in excellent timings of 17.57 63rd and 65th 18.05 respectively.

There were also impressive outings from both Nathan Nicholson, who just missed out on some silverware and Matthew Shaw saw them home in 39th 15.39, third boy 10 and 53rd 17.00 19th M/16.

The remainder all followed in tight grouping throughout, lead in by Kayleigh Sayers 70th, 3rd G/10 19.22, Helen Archbold 75th 4th G/10 19.51, Harry Welsh 80th 14th M/10 20.00 pipping his father David by one placing and second, Kyeran Sayers 83rd 15th M/10 20.12, Demi Douthwaite also pipped her injury recovering mother Donna by a place and second, finishing in 84th 5th G/10 20.19.

Emma Metcalfe got the better of Joel Shaw in 86th 6th G/10 20.44 and 87th 14th M13th 20.45, John Rees-Fuller was tailend Charlie in 90th position from a good field of over 120 finishing in 21.11 17th M/10.

Tony Hindmarch completed a windy and sand-blasting Blackpool Marathon in an excellent time of 3.19, club mate Andrew Laybourn was reduced to spectator from the promenade with cups of tea as he recuperates from hamstring troubles.

Only Darren Fairclough completed the Croxdale ten-mile road race. A club Grand Prix race in 69 minute. He now leads the series by 41.5 points, with challenges from Donna and Neil Douthwaite who had amassed 38.5 and 26.5 points and a possible outsider with 16.5 Kenny Sams.
