RECEIVERS at troubled shipbuilder Cammell Laird have announced a further round of job losses as time was running out on attempts to find buyers for the firm's yards.

More than 100 workers will be made redundant in the latest cuts, including 60 at Birkenhead and 37 at the Hebburn yard on South Tyneside.

Receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that a management buy-out bid for the yard at Tyneside had "fallen away", although talks were continuing with other interested parties.

The buy-out, led by managing director Dave Skentelbery, has failed to raise enough backing from banks and venture capitalists.

Work is due to run out at the Birkenhead and Tyneside yards at the end of the month.

Hundreds of redundancies have been announced since the receivers were called in earlier in the year, leaving Cammell's workforce at fewer than 700.

The site on Teesside has already been mothballed.

The only hope for the Hebburn yard of the operation may come from Swan Hunter, based at Wallsend.

The yard's boss Jaap Kroese is believed to be interested in the South Tyneside operation and could be willing to throw its remaining workforce a lifeline.
