STAFF at the North-East Chamber of Commerce have reacted angrily to a decision by their employers to increase the length of their working week.

The chamber is increasing their hours from 36 to about 37-and-a-half per week from next January, and reducing flexible working hours from September.

A statement from the staff said: "Out of the blue, the company has decided to increase working hours and take away the flexi-hours implemented a few months ago. This is a case of another 'caring company' abusing its staff."

The chamber claims the changes will help it to get closer to its 5,000 members, and offer a more relevant service.

Isobel Robertson, finance director at the chamber, said: "Over the past two years, the North-East Chamber of Commerce has carried out a thorough review of its strategies and working methods.

"Part of that process involved the appointment of management consultants to examine working methods and salaries. The findings suggested a working week more in line with industry standards.

"As a result of this study, we intend to increase the working week by 1.25 hours to 37.25 hours, but this will be accompanied by appropriate salary reviews.

"We are not abandoning our approach to flexible working, which helps staff meet domestic and personal commitments, we are merely amending it to ensure we can always meet members' needs."

The chamber said the proposals were discussed.

Mrs Robertson said: "People had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments and still can, in confidence, over the next four months, before the changes are due to be implemented."
