A MAN was rescued by firefighters when his flat became engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were called to the kitchen fire at Walpole Street, Middlesbrough, at about 4am on Saturday morning after neighbours heard the smoke alarm.
The 23-year-old was asleep on a sofa and was suffering heavily from the effects of smoke when he was rescued. He was given oxygen at the scene and taken to Middlesbrough General Hospital.
Station Officer Dave Wass, from Middlesbrough fire station, said the fire was started by a chip pan.
He said: "He was very lucky because the smoke alarm alerted the neighbours. He had also closed the kitchen door behind him, and that helped."
He repeated the advice that people using chip pans should never leave them unattended.
