PERMISSION has been granted for a major music event in the region, despite reservations over one of the act's fans.

A special meeting of Middlesbrough Council's licensing committee was called today after councillors failed to reach a decision over Radio One's application for a licence to hold One Big Sunday.

The annual event, which takes place at Stewart Park, Middlesbrough, last year attracted around 40,000 people.

But a question mark hung over this year's after councillors were told that garage duo DJ Luck and MC Neat, who are booked to perform, attract a rowdy following.

At the meeting, Cleveland licensing officer, PC Revis Phillips, said the firm responsible for the event's security, Showsec, had provided reassurance over the threat of trouble.

"Showsec had concerns with DJ Luck and MC Mean and said the line-up had changed from last year's, which was family oriented," he said.

"But as they are only on for three minutes, they said nobody would travel a long way to see them. We accept that people will follow them, but not in numbers that will cause the police any further concern than the other groups."

Councillors accepted the applicant's submission that no more than 50,000 people are likely to attend the event, on Sunday, August 19. They granted a public entertainment licence with the conditions that the organisers submit a safety certificate for the stage and any outstanding electrical certificates, and that the noise level does not exceed 65 decibels.

Radio One has confirmed that the concert will include Samantha Mumba, former All-Saint Mel Blatt and Artful Dodger. It will be broadcast from 2-4pm and Super Furry Animals will play live from 4-5pm.
