PEOPLE in their fifties have been improving their strength and suppleness by taking part in a Tai Chi course.

The 20-week course, which was organised by New College Durham and Age Concern, took place in Shakespeare Hall, Durham City.

It was an extension of six-week taster sessions, which took place before Christmas.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese art, said to have benefits ranging from increased suppleness to relaxation.

Course leader Royston Bourke said: "After a short time practising Tai Chi, the physical benefits become obvious with increased balance, coordination and better posture."

Mike Bridge, of Age Concern County Durham, said that the New College course had been one of its most successful activities this year.

"Evaluation forms from the participants show that over 85 per cent of the group felt that they have seen a specific health benefit that they can attribute to the Tai Chi course," he said.
