THE campaign to rejuvenate an historic theatre has taken a significant step, with a new design ready for planners to inspect.

The first attempt to revamp the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire, failed to win universal support.

The principle of internal restoration to better reflect the building's rich history was broadly accepted - but the architects' vision for a new extension to replace the annex built in the 1960s prompted controversy.

A glass facade to a new bar and coffee lounge would have allowed passers-by a glimpse of the inner wall of the listed building.

With the crumbling annex gone, it was also hoped the building would look more like a theatre and less like a barn.

However, the new look was too rich for some tastes and, as a result, the theatre's architects have been locked in negotiations with planners over an acceptable compromise.

The result was released for the first time this morning.

Chairman of the theatre's trustees, Lady Crathorne, said: "This is a complicated project, given the limitations of space and sensitivity of the Grade One listed building in a conservation area.

"We have consulted widely before we arrived at this proposed design to ensure all the objectives are achieved. Reaching this point has involved careful co-ordination of architects, theatre and historical experts and a massive fund-raising campaign.

"We are grateful to everyone who has helped us get to this stage."

While Richmondshire District Council's planning committee expected to debate the project within weeks, theatre management can now focus on fund-raising to help cover the costs.

The Heritage Lottery Fun has already pledged over £500,000 towards the £1m restoration programme, which should help unlock additional grants from other trusts and theatrical organisations.

However, at least £200,000 still has to be raised locally, with a gala opera night planned in October and tickets already on sale for a grand prize draw, with a new car on offer as the top prize.

More information on the restoration programme, fund-raising events or the draw will be available at an open day at The Georgian Theatre Royal on Tuesday.
