FLOWER power might not help put out a fire or catch a villain, but the emergency services in Darlington have created some very arresting floral displays outside their stations.

The police and firefighters in the town have shown a softer side, after spending much of this year helping to keep their stations looking bright.

Their passion for plants comes after judges in last year's Britain in Bloom competition picked out the police and fire stations as letting the town's bid down.

In its attempt to win the best small city category in this year's competition, which is supported by The Northern Echo, Darlington Borough Council asked if the police and firefighters could make more of an effort.

With the help of the council's award-winning gardening team, the two emergency services have impressed organisers at the authority.

Michelle Parkes, the council's sponsorship manager and Britain in Bloom organiser, said: "This year our entry is very much a community effort, and the police and fire services are an important part of the community.

"The judges singled them out a bit last year, but after some gentle persuasion they have really impressed."

Ian Davis, assistant divisional officer at Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire and police services are a very important part of the community and we have been glad to help. In fact, people can enjoy the floral displays and learn about fire safety during our open day on September 15."

The council has been encouraging pubs, schools, voluntary groups, shops, businesses and the public to send in their entries for the best floral design.

The closing date for entries was on Monday, and winners will be announced shortly.

National judges will be in the town on August 17.
