Durham City Harriers - Val Hancock made the long trip to Brisbane, Australia, to compete in the 14th World Veterans Championships and she returned with two medals in the 8K cross-country race.

She ran extremely well to gain a well deserved silver medal in the Over-55 category in a very good time of 35.35, and as an added bonus, helped the Great British team win gold, ahead of New Zealand and Australia.

Val also competed in the 1,500 metres and finished fifth in a time of 5.33.

Meanwhile, in the local 5km Sunderland Road Race - incorporating the North-East Counties Championships - Rob Hand, who has been in great form, just missed out on a bronze medal by finishing fifth in a good time of 14.58. Steve Everett also had a fine run, finishing 17th overall but was 2nd (Over-40) veteran in a time of 15.34.

Steve Marshall (V40) finished 48th in 16.55, while Steve Nesbitt finished 63rd on 17.4 out of a field of 210 runners.

New Marske Harriers

The track and field team clinched promotion for the second year in succession by finishing second in the final fixture of the Northern Men's League Division Three North-East at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.

The Harriers held their Victorian race over ten miles. From the start Alan Stimpson (NMH) and Dave Bond (Askern) shot into the lead and battled it out with Alan taking the lead then Dave. Dave Bond passed the finishing line in a time of 51.39 with Alan Stimpson second in 51.54 well ahead of the rest of the 102 finishers. Paul Kelly (Hartlepool BB) was third then followed NMH Nigel Barnbrook 14th in 61.20.

The men's team finished second to Mandale with ladies team finishing first with second lady Helen Humphrey, third lady Sharon Gaytor; fifth lady Lynn Woods; Sheila Allen was first lady in the Harlow ten miles. Mark Gamble-Thompson finished fourth in 57.48, his son Lewis was second in the three km fun run while his wife Bev and daughter Hannah both finished second in their fun runs.

The recent Court Inn Clamber race around the Durham area, which was organised by the Striders, was won by Ian Crampton of Durham Harriers in 28:30, the second man Mike Bennet of the host club came home in 32:14.
