NORTHUMBRIA police is urging women who may be thinking of joining the force to try a day's familiarisation course.

The recruiting department wants potential candidates to see for themselves what the recruitment and selection process entails before they apply.

The force aims to increase the number of women officers by 100 - at the moment 16.8 per cent of officers are women - and Northumbria wants to raise this to 20 per cent in keeping with national guidelines.

Recruiting team Sergeant David Gregory said: "We are convinced there are many women who simply need to find out more information about Northumbria Police before they actually apply."

Anyone wishing to attend the event at police headquarters in Ponteland from 9.30am-4.30pm on Wednesday, August 22, should contact (01661) 868816 or 868849
