A FINANCIAL worker who took part in a church tower abseil has raised several hundred pounds for charity.

Moira Appleton, from Spennymoor, recently abseiled 100 ft down St John's Church, in Shildon, to raise money for the Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland.

Moira, who works at the Middlesborough branch of Peal Insurance, raised £320, and parent company AMP matched that amount.

The £640 she raised will go towards the cost of a hydrobath for the terminally ill patients at the hospice.

Moira said: "This was only the second time I have abseiled and although I was very excited to be doing it, it was a real challenge because I had to climb around the bell tower before taking part."
