A YOUNG man, who was said to have a "love-hate relationship with his mother" has been jailed for six months after causing £800 damage to her home.

Karl Sutcliffe, 18, of Wensleydale Square, Bishop Auckland, appeared at Sedgefield Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to criminal damage and resisting arrest, and was awaiting sentence after being found guilty of taking a car without consent last year.

David Crooks, prosecuting, told the court that Sutcliffe had been riding his BMX bike after having been drinking, when he was knocked over and injured.

He returned home and had an argument with his mother, Jaqueline, when she suggested he should go to hospital.

Mr Crooks said: "He pushed his mother across the kitchen and she fell across the sink.

"She told him to leave and only return when he had sobered up. He refused and she pushed him into the yard and shut the door. He kicked open the door and it fell off its hinges."

Mr Crooks said Sutcliffe repeatedly refused to leave and when police arrived he became more abusive and threw the door across the kitchen.

He struggled with two police officers, kicked out and swore, before being arrested.

John Turner, for Sutcliffe, said: "He and his mother have a love-hate relationship."

Sutcliffe was sentenced to four months in prison for taking a vehicle without consent and two months for criminal damage, the sentences to run consecutively.

He was also sentenced to a month in prison for resisting arrest, to run concurrently, and was disqualified from driving for six months.
