A TEENAGE girl was still fighting for her life last night 24 hours after a serious car accident.

The 14-year-old, who has not been named at the request of her family, was taken to Newcastle General Hospital on Thursday night after the crash on a major road between Stanley and Chester-le-Street, in County Durham.

The girl, from West Pelton, near Chester-le-Street, sustained fractures to her leg and pelvis and severe head injuries. Hospital staff said she was still in a "life- threatening condition" last night.

The accident happened just 200 yards from High Handenhold fire station at about 6.15pm.

The male driver of a Citroen Xantia, in which of the girl was travelling, was was taken to the University Hospital in Durham with minor injuries, but was later released.

The driver of the Ford Escort which collided with the car on a turn off from the A693, also a male, was also taken to hospital, but was later released.

Leading firefighter Stuart Thew said: "We had to cut the roof off the car to release the girl. It seemed there had been a hit to the side of the car the girl was in."

A police spokesman appealed for witnesses to come forward. "This is a very serious accident and we obviously keeping a close eye on the condition of the girl," he said
