Jarrow Roofing pulled off a shock on the opening day of the season by defeating champions Bedlington 3-1.

Paul Chow was Roofing's hero with two goals, and manager Richie McLoughlin said: "We played some very good football, and we defended well when Bedlington put us under pressure."

Roofing took the lead after ten minutes when Tony Woodhouse crossed for Paul Hodgson to score.

They got another when Chow scored from the spot and he then took advantage of a mistake by stand-in keeper Steve White to add the third.

Alex Benjamin pulled a goal back in the last minute.

Durham had a morale-boosting 4-0 win at Dunston in a game between two expected title contenders.

Durham took the lead when Wayne Edgcumbe bundled in a Stuart Irvine corner, then he cut in from the left and scored the second.

Richard Ord sent Irvine away to score the third with a left foot shot, and Gavin Mudd got the fourth.

Brandon beat Marske United 3-0, after taking the lead in the sixth minute when Richie Pitt headed in a Steve Huggins corner.

They missed further chances until the 56th minute when Pitt headed a second, then Andy Cuthbertson scored the third from the penalty spot.

West Auckland enjoyed a 3-0 win at Morpeth.

Tow Law scored three times in the second half to defeat Newcastle Blue Star 4-1.

They took the lead after 26 minutes when Phil Jones' free kick was blocked by the defensive wall, but he fired home the rebound.

Blue Star levelled on half time when a bad clearance by Barry Poskitt went straight to Graeme McDonald, who set up Paul Hollier to score.

But Scott Nicholson restored the home lead with a header, then Brian Wake scored from the spot after Nicholson was fouled.

Marc Eccles completed the scoring with a 25-yard shot.

Thornaby beat fellow promoted club Washington 2-0 at Teesdale Park.

Guisborough, with new manager Steve Corden in charge, drew 1-1 with Consett at the King George.

Billingham Synthonia came from behind to draw 2-2 with Seaham Red Star, Whitley Bay won 2-0 at Chester-le-Street with goals from Michael Fenwick and in the other First Division game, Peterlee and Billingham Town drew 0-0.

In the second division, Willington's new manager David Styles saw his side lose 5-1 at home to Esh Winning, for whom new signing Gary Messer scored a hat trick. Brett Cummings scored on his 300th appearance for Willington.

Easington had a 6-0 victory at Alnwick, with Ian Matthews scoring a hat trick.

Crook beat Whickham 4-0, Washington Nissan drew 3-3 at Horden after trailing at half time, and Shildon's Nigel Bolton scored just a few minutes into his return debut for the club in their 3-0 home win over Murton.

Northallerton beat Prudhoe 2-1, Micky Pugh scoring the winner from the spot after 53 minutes, and Kennek Ryhope beat Shotton 2-1, thanks to a 40 yard winner from Les Gamble.
