A WEEKEND of entertainment is being planned in Shildon to raise funds for a hospice.

A live band and fun run will feature in the Bank Holiday celebrations next weekend.

Juke Box Jive take the stage at Sunnydale Leisure Centre on Saturday, and 300 tickets have already been sold for the event.

Runners will set off from the town's running track on Sunday morning leading crowds to Jubilee Fields, where a host of entertainment will be provided. The first boy and girl to finish will receive mountain bikes, while the first adults to complete the course will will be presented with nine carat gold watches. All competitors will receive a commemorative medal and certificate.

Pipes and drums, a falconry display, craft stalls, Punch and Judy, vintage and classic cars, tug-of-war, magicians and clowns, will be among the attractions at Jubilee Fields.

A raffle will be held offering prizes including DVD players, microwave ovens and a weekend break for two.

All proceeds from the event, organised by the Thickley Ward Labour Party, will go to the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland.

Organisers are also trying to trace trophies and exhibition certificates that would have been awarded at the Shildon Show, which was a Bank Holiday tradition in the 1940s and 1950s.
