AN organisation that provides sports and leisure activities for disabled County Durham youngsters is on the move.

Durham Area Disability Leisure Group is moving from Sacriston Community Centre to the Riverside South development at Chester-le-Street, which includes Durham County Cricket Club's base and other sports facilities.

Thanks to help from Chester-le-Street District Council, its new base will be the Donald Owen Clarke centre, which will be more accessible and provide better facilities to its members.

The group runs a Cycle- Ability scheme which enables disabled youngsters to get out and about on custom-made bikes. It also has a weekly trampoline club, horse riding, and offers fencing, archery, golf, rowing, fishing go-karting and quad biking.

Residential visits, outings, family fun days and courses in topics such as first aid, deaf awareness and sign languages are also part of the group's programme.

Group coordinator Lynne Watson said: "We are delighted to be moving into such well equipped premises.

"Members will have access to some of the sports facilities, such as the athletics track, not to mention easy access by bus, car or boat.

"Our CycleAbility scheme will be perfect for this new site, as it is so safe and flat.

"Unfortunately, this cannot go ahead until we have purchased a suitable storage container and fitted out our new workshop.

"We have had help from the Greggs Trust in the form of a grant for £500 towards running costs, but we desperately need more funding.''

The move takes place next Tuesday with help from volunteers, members and Nicholson's Transport, of Billingham, Teesside.
