A SURGEON whose behaviour towards two women patients put them at serious risk, has been found guilty of irresponsible conduct.

Peter Silverstone, 58, from Elmfield Park, Newcastle, has been before the General Medical Council's professional conduct committee for the past few days.

It followed complaints from two women patients who had undergone hysterectomies performed by Mr Silverstone at the Bupa Hospital, in Washington, Tyne and Wear, between 1995 to 1998. He denied the allegations.

Yesterday, the committee found all the allegations against Mr Silverstone proved in relation to his treatment of two women, Mrs C and Mrs D. These included failing to keep proper medical notes and allowing a fifth-year medical student to assist him in performing the hysterectomy on Mrs D.

It had also been claimed that the surgeon, by failing to ensure that he or a suitable alternative surgeon was readily available after the operation, had inadequately and irresponsibly managed Mrs C's case. He faced a similar allegation in relation to Mrs D.

Mr Silverstone got stuck in traffic after one operation and took an hour to make a 25-mile journey back to the ward when the patient suffered serious internal bleeding.

Michael Curwen, for the doctor, told the committee: "He does not wish to go back to gynaecology at any time. He has not practised in that sphere for a period of years. There is no question of him going back."

Mr Silverstone was already facing disciplinary action for abusing his professional position and incompetent treatment after circumcisions of two baby boys in County Durham left them howling in pain.

The committee is now deliberating on a charge of misconduct, which Mr Silverstone denies.

The hearing continues.
