A Darlington school has opened its doors during the summer holidays to teach people new skills.

Haughton Community School is running a variety of courses with funding from the Darlington Local Education Authority and the Learning and Skills Council Tees Valley.

The one-week, two-hour courses include painting, Indian head massage and pottery.

Heather Small, course organiser, said: "We have had an excellent response."

The week's activities are part of a campaign to encourage people to sign up for longer autumn courses.

Free evening courses will run every Thursday, from September 13.

Summer student Carol Gorman, 34, from Darlington, said: "As I have got two small children the creche facilities have been extremely helpful.

"I did the pottery course and am doing painting.

"I am looking forward to the Indian head massage."
