TANKER drivers in Teesside yesterday launched the first of two 24-hour strikes over a pay dispute.

The P&O trans-European drivers, who deliver chemicals to manufacturers, were protesting at new contracts which could lead to wage cuts.

Union leaders warned that drivers would have to spend more time behind the wheel under the company's plans.

More than 70 workers around the country are protesting, including 14 at Teesside, over the wage structure which could cut pay packets by about £5,000 a year.

Drivers would be paid a basic wage of £16,000, which would be increased with payments depending on the number of deliveries, kilometres and collections performed.

Another strike is due to take place on September 24, although it could escalate to two days a week if unresolved.

P&O Trans European said the industrial action was counter productive.
