TWO Barnard Castle publicans have reached the final of a national pub and gardening competition.

Malcolm and Doreen Nixon, of the Cricketers Arms, beat off challengers to win the award for County Durham's Best Small Garden in The Union Pub Company Garden Competition.

Judges were flooded with entries for this year's competition, which aims to find the publican who is both master of the pumps and the watering can.

They will now go up against the other three finalists in their category to fight it out for the title.

Mr Nixon said yesterday: "We are so happy to have won the regional competition.

"It is important to give our customers that little bit extra, and a colourful and summery atmosphere adds to their enjoyment."

The final of the competition will be held on Tuesday, October 2, at a luncheon to be held in the Botanical Gardens, in Birmingham.
