MUGGERS who picked on a pensioner stole a gold watch that had belonged to her mother.

The incident happened just before 3pm on Wednesday, when the 73-year-old woman from Acklam was on her way to meet a friend.

She had just got off a bus, and was walking along a footpath in Newham Way, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, towards Grange Road, when she was attacked from behind.

One of two youths pulled her bag from her shoulder and the pair ran off, leaving the woman extremely shaken. In addition to the gold bracelet watch, they got away with £50, credit cards and house keys.

The thief is in his late teens, 5ft 8ins, slim built, with short hair, and was wearing a royal blue top. His accomplice is similar in appearance although slimmer, and was wearing a light blue top.

PC Bob Jackson, of Coulby Newham police, said: "It appears that these two youths had been lying in wait for someone to come along. They took the opportunity to attack a defenceless elderly lady who is now very traumatised.

"The attack occurred in the late afternoon, and I'm hoping witnesses may come forward with vital information."
