Redcar and Cleveland College has a new principal, it was announced last week.

Alan Old, currently vice-principal of the college and acting principal since July 2000, takes over the reins from Lynne Howe, who was suspended last year amid controversy surrounding a development at the college's Connections campus in Redcar.

Mr Old was principal of the Sir William Turner Sixth Form College from 1988 until its merger with Cleveland College of Further Education in 1994.

He said: "I am very pleased to be officially appointed to the post of principal. As head of a committed team I am confident that we will be able to take the college forward at a time of great change in further education.

"Redcar and Cleveland College is committed to ensuring an environment which all the community can benefit from and achieve success. From the board of governors down we are determined to have a community college which the borough and Teesside can be proud of.
