East Rainton clinched the championship of division one with a final day victory at home to Plawsworth. The visitors were all out for the last ball of the 45 overs for 113 runs which included 31 by Peter Harwood. The batsmen, however, found the bowling of the three-man East Rainton attack difficult to cope with, especially Ian Kitching who in 22 overs, seven of which were maidens, captured five wickets for only 48 runs. Roy Richardson gave support with two for 43 from 17 overs including five maidens and Lindsay Fleming took a couple of wickets for 14 runs during his six overs spell.

When they replied East Rainton lost the early wicket of Neil Matthews but Gordon Steel (31no) and Tom Hannon, who had two sixes and six boundaries in an undefeated 46, steered their side to an eight wickets victory and the celebrations started.

Wearmouth, who have been involved in a two-horse race for the championship during the closing weeks of the season, end runners-up. They defeated North Bitchburn by five wickets when Peter Stronach opened and scored 40 before Wright added 54 and Stephenson carried his bat for 46. Tenwick claimed three wickets for 82 runs in the North Bitchburn attack.

Batting first North Bitchburn posted the useful total of 177 for nine with both Dunn and Clarke scoring 37 while Bunkle added a useful 28 runs. Hale returned figures of three for 55 and Dhillon three for 42 for Wearmouth.

Medomsley are third top and they ended the season with a seven wickets victory at Littletown. When the home side made first use of the wicket they compiled 123 for nine which included an unbeaten 43 by opening batsman Davis while for Medomsley, Orton, Dixon and Vickers all took three wickets.

Responding Medomsley were indebted to opening batsman Hurst who batted throughout the reply scoring 39 not out while Dixon made 31 before he had to retire and Milburn finished with an undefeated 35.

Washington had six wickets to spare on their visit to Sunderland Hospitals who compiled 128 for nine including 40 by John Surtees. Wilkie with figures of four for 31 was the most productive of the five-man Washington attack. Replying the visitors secured the necessary runs losing four wickets as Thompson batted throughout the innings scoring 68 not out.

Belford House romped to 247 for seven before declaring following 37.4 overs at Coxhoe. Gary Pickering hit ten fours and five sixes in 110, Kevin Youlden added 32 and Dave Francis 31 not out before Coxhoe replied with 154 all out from 42 overs. Kevin Appleby (33) and Paul Maddison (42) top performed with the bat and for Belford House Bruce Unwin sent down 17 overs, three of them maidens, in taking four wickets for 42 runs.

Benwell Hill ended with 134 for eight at Simonside, which included an undefeated 71 by Barry Pearson, but the total proved insufficient as Simonside recorded only their fifth win of the season having six wickets in hand. David Connelly led the way with 57 and in the Benwell Hill innings Ross, with four wickets for 36 runs, top performed with the ball for Simonside.

Cleveland League

Champions Normanby Parklands completed a successful season defeating New Marske by four wickets. The home side were all out for 146 and most of the runs came from Jerry Alderson whose 53 included one six and seven boundaries and Gary Alderson with an unbeaten 30. Mohammed Ayub was the most successful of the Normanby Parklands bowlers and in 7.3 overs he claimed three wickets for 19 runs.

Replying Normanby Parklands secured their 15th win in 22 games replaying with 150 for six. Ayub carried his bat for 28 and Mead scored 34 with a six and three boundaries before he was run out. Richie Lightwing captured three wickets for 20 runs in five overs for New Marske.

Parklands won 15, drew six and lost one game while Loftus finished runners-up ahead of third placed Hinderwell.

Loftus entertained Ormesby Hall in their last game of the season and when they made first use of the wicket posted 210 for the loss of five wickets. Barratt top scored with 80 not out and Dixon made a useful 36 while Pearson added 28.

When Ormesby Hall batted they managed 92 which included a top scoring 32 by Cook and for Loftus Morrison again bowled well taking six wickets for 46 runs.

Hinderwell suffered only their third defeat of the season losing by 63 runs to Middlesbrough Co-op. Faced with a target of 166 Hinderwell were all out for 102 and more than half the runs came from opening batsman Spenceley with 64 while for the Co-op Hadfield had figures of three for 21.

Batting first Middlesbrough Co-op ended on 165 all out and Hadfield was only three runs short of a century when he was caught.

The Ladle had four wickets to spare overtaking the Brotton total of 79. Hanczik contributed 33 for Brotton and The Ladle Burdon took four for 23 and Moss three for 47.

Replying The Ladle lost six wickets before meeting their modest target and were indebted to Burdon, who went in at No 8 and carried his bat for 32. Whitwell had a good day with the ball for Brotton taking four for 42.

Staithes produced a good batting performance against Greatham Paragonians winning by five wickets despite being required to score almost 200 runs for victory. Following a poor start to their innings when the first three batsmen contributed only 17 runs between them, Staithes were rescued by Ward with 52 and by Brown who scored 87.

When Paragonians went into bat they were all out for 195 which included 71 by opening batsman Stelling and 50 from Craine while for Staithes Theaker captured five for 30 and Brown three for 53.

Dormans defeated Skelton Castle by six wickets after restricting the visitors to 133 for nine which included an unbeaten 32 by Hoggarth. Dale had a splendid day with the ball for Dormans and he took eight of the nine wickets to fall for 44 runs before Grosvenor (29) and Insall (35) gave the Dormans reply a good send-off. Iqbal added a useful 20 runs and man of the match Dale carried his bat for 28.

In Division two Loftus B completed their season losing by seven wickets to Normanby Parklands following a high scoring game. Loftus totalled 190 for seven with most of the runs coming from Athley (33), Tyreman (34) and Shaw (52) and in reply Normanby Parklands won losing just three wickets. Their match winners with the bat were McGough (30), Ramzan (64) and Scrafton (33no).
