THE flag of St Oswald will once again be the emblem of the region after 1,300 years - if the North-East Constitutional Convention campaign gets its way.

The group, which is hoping the Government will grant a regional assembly within the life of the current Parliament, chose the flag after consulting the public.

It says that the choice will lie with an elected assembly if the Government decides to hold a regional referendum on the issue of an elected North-East parliament.

Leading member Don Price said the North-East was expected to be the first region to be granted a referendum on the issue.

He said that the convention and other campaign groups were formulating a report on the need for the assembly.

A convention was held in Durham Castle last weekend to formulate more precise details.

Mr Price said that the flag of St Oswald - one of the most powerful kings of the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria - was thought to be first ever flown in England.

The purple and gold flag will feature on car-stickers in campaigns for an assembly.
