SOME very young students are preparing to begin work at North Yorkshire's first "children's university".

Believed to be the first in the country run by an individual school, the university will be a free Saturday morning school for seven to 11-year-olds from Tang Hall Primary, in York.

The idea is to generate enthusiasm for learning and self-confidence among the youngsters, giving them benefits which will last for the rest of their lives. A coordinator, two lecturers, a support assistant and a dozen artists covering a wide range of fields have been taken on.

The children's university will also host a paid-for advanced maths course for year six pupils from the York area who are exceptionally good at the subject. Sixty-four youngsters will attend the first day tomorrow, with ten more joining the course a week later.
