FIDGET the feline is a classic example of a fat-cat boss.

The 14-year-old, which weighs 18lb, has the run of the Pet Fare store where it lives, and regularly helps itself to whatever food takes its fancy.

But owners Wendy and Shaun Kirk say the other animals - including fish and birds - are safe because only packets of pet food fall prey to its cravings.

During the day, Fidget lazes on the counter of the shop in North Shields, North Tyneside, and after closing has the run of the shop, complete with bed upstairs.

When the cat feels peckish, it just claws open a packet of its favourite dried cat food.

Mr Kirk said: "The vets are worried about his size and want him to go on a diet, but the chances of that are slim to nil."
