A CONCERT to raise money for the town's Christmas lights takes place in Redcar on Saturday night - thanks to The Northern Echo's sister paper in east Cleveland.

The Clarion, east Cleveland's favourite weekly newspaper, has teamed up with Redcar Business Association and Redcar Town Centre Management to provide a cabaret of musical entertainment.

It is the fourth time the concert has been held, and this year will be compered by Stewart MacFarlane, of BBC Radio Cleveland

He said: "The special finale will include the 200-plus artists coming together to perform a rendition of Amazing Grace.

"It will feature a solo piper and voice on the first and second verse, with a combined pipe, drums, band and choirs' final verse that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end."

Local singer Sam Herron will be performing a medley of Doris Day hits.

Every year, businesses across Redcar, together with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, work together to put up the festive lights along the High Street. This year it is hoped they will be bigger and better.

Tickets for the concert, which includes free entry to the fireworks night at Redcar Racecourse on November 3, are priced at £5 with concessions at £3.50.

People can collect tickets before 2.30pm today at The Clarion offices, 110 High Street, Redcar, or from Redcar Bowl, Redcar Station Business Centre or by calling (01642) 659999
