Jonathan Harries has impressed since becoming a national athletics champion - just months after taking up the sport.

The 15-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer won two medals in class six of the National CP Championships in Nottingham; gold in the 800m and bronze in the 400m.

Inspired by a visit to his school, Bedale High, by paralympian, Hazel Robson of Sunderland, Jonathan was competing against athletes in an open age range.

"The whole school are pleased as punch for him," said proud head teacher Dr John Critchlow.

"He's always been keen. He takes part in all the cross-country races and although he doesn't win, he's never anywhere near the back and he always gets a clap from everyone.

"He's battled against the situation and succeeded and it's a remarkable achievement. After all, everybody is good at something, and he's good at this."

Head of physical education at the school, Martyn Coombs said: "He is so proud of his gold medal and his self esteem has been greatly enhanced.

"The school is also proud of his success since he is the first national champion the school has ever had.
