POLICE in Sedgefield borough are warning people about dangers over the misuse of fireworks in the run-up to November 5.
Officers have been told to check that retailers are not selling fireworks to anyone under 18.
A series of firework-related incidents in Newton Aycliffe last year led to a police initiative, Operation Argon, involving extra patrols.
Although it is felt there is no need for a similar operation this year, officers have been told to remain vigilant.
Chief Superintendent Paul Tinkler, divisional commander for Sedgefield, said: "There is no operation specifically set up as such. But there has been a reminder to all section sergeants and inspectors to make contact with shops which sell fireworks in their area, just to remind shopkeepers of their legal responsibilities to encourage them to act sensibly.
"We would also urge people to behave sensibly with fireworks and would remind them that to set fireworks off in a public place is an offence.
"Unfortunately kids have been setting off fireworks where they shouldn't have for many years."
People are urged to attend an organised display, such as the police and fire brigade display, at Aykley Heads, Durham, on Monday, at 7pm.
