TWO new exhibits illustrating John Bowes' passion for horse racing have gone on show at the Bowes Museum.

The first, a picture, came to light after a visitor saw the Hidden Treasures exhibition at the museum, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Several of the pictures were similar to his engraved aquatint depicting Meteor, a racehorse owned by Bowes, which won the 2000 Guineas in 1842. The painting is by Harry Hall, a well-known racehorse painter.

The second exhibit is a scarf which depicts Derby winners. It has been donated by a woman from Norton, Stockton. The scarf mentions John Bowes, because four of the medals which feature on it are in honour of his winning horses in 1835, 1843, 1852 and 1853.

Bowes museum was designed for John and Josephine Bowes. It was built in chateau style as a gift to the British people.
