THE Tories have gained an extra foothold in the Dales in a district council by-election - but by the narrowest of margins.
Wendy Morton wrested Leyburn and Bellerby from the Liberal Democrats, although the result was subject to a recount.
In the final count, John Weedon lost to Mrs Morton by just four votes.
Mrs Morton replaces Liberal Democrat Edward Forth, who stood for his party against William Hague in the General Election in June.
Afterwards, he decided to quit front-line politics to concentrate on other commitments.
Mrs Morton, 33, is married to electrician David and the couple live in the village of Redmire.
Her priorities will include helping small businesses, particularly those hit hard by foot-and-mouth disease, and supporting the development of sport and leisure facilities in the area.
"I think we need more local people involved in local government and more younger people, and I thought it was time that I did my bit,'' she said.
"I want to get out and about and meet the people I now represent.
"I can't promise to change things but I will be around and I want to listen to people, appreciate what's going on and start to work for the community.
