THE new film by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall had its regional premiere in Newcastle last night.

Sean Landless, the 15-year-old Sunderland schoolboy star of Gabriel And Me, was among those attending the special screening at the Tyneside Cinema.

He was joined by other cast members, including Newcastle-born actress Rosie Rowell, East Is East star Jordan Routledge and director Udayan Prasad.

Comedian Billy Connolly, who plays the Archangel Gabriel, did not attend.

Gabriel and Me is based on Hall's prize-winning radio play I Luv You Jimmy Spud and tells the story of a boy who wants to become an angel so he can help his dying father.

It was shot partly on location in the North-East last year and received its world premiere screening at this summer's Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The film goes on general release on November 2, and the makers are hoping it will be as successful as Billy Elliot
