THE traditional burning of Guy Fawkes has been swapped for the slaying of a dragon as a town celebrates bonfire night this week.
Youngsters from Crook have been working with artist Malcolm Smith at the town's Elite Hall, to create a dragon sculpture out of wire mesh and paper for this year's fireworks spectacular, in Bishop Auckland.
Mr Smith said: "We decided we did not like the idea of burning a person so we opted for a dragon.''
The dragon will be placed in the centre of the bonfire before it is lit at the West Mills Playing Fields, at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, at 7pm tomorrow.
The event, organised by Wear Valley District Council, kicks off at 5.30pm with a funfair and concession stands.
A firework display set to music on the theme of fright night starts at 7.20pm.
Wear Valley District Council is appealing to motorists to be considerate and use public car parks.
In previous years, residents in Etherley Lane and Toronto have experienced problems with people leaving cars on private drives, blocking rights of way and parking dangerously stopping the flow of traffic.
Cones will be in place and a warning has been issued that patrolling police will give out tickets.
Some cars may even be towed away if they are causing a blockage.
A limited number of disabled parking spaces are available on site but passes must be obtained in advance from the council's community services department by calling (01388) 761541.
