A NETBALL player has been named the Darlington Young Sportswinner for October.

Kaye Waterfall-Brown, who attends Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, scooped the Orange-sponsored award for her efforts with Holliways Netball Club, at Hummersknott Comprehensive School.

Kaye, 17, is described as an "exceptional" member of the team, never missing a practice and having been a member for six years. Her individual performances have made a big contribution to the team's success.

Runner-up in the competition was Matthew Hall, 14, and third was Chris Hughes, 14, both members of the Eastbourne Eagles American Flag Football Team.

The Eastbourne Eagles' under-15s team achieved success by winning the team award, sponsored by Amec.

The team won the British championships in May to qualify as Great Britain's representative at the European Flag Football Championships, in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, in June, in which they finished runners-up.

The coach award, sponsored by the Master Skills Sporting Academy, was won by Vera Pyrah, head coach at Holliways Netball Club.

The service to sport award, sponsored by Darlington Borough Council, was won by Lesley Teesdale, secretary of the Darlington and District Netball League.

Awards were presented at Orange's Yarm Road building.

Nomination forms are now available for the November awards, featuring athletics, bowls, tennis, orienteering and equestrian sports.
