HUNDREDS of people are expected to join a peace march and rally through the streets of Newcastle tomorrow.
The organiser, Tyneside Stop the War Coalition, is calling for a halt to the bombing in Afghanistan in a bid to avert a humanitarian crisis.
The group is a broad-based coalition of religious, political and peace groups, which has met since soon after the September 11 attacks on the US, to plan a series of protests, vigils and petitions.
The march will assemble at 11am, on the ceremonial way at the Civic Centre, and proceed to Grey's Monument via Northumberland Street, for the rally and speeches.
Speakers will include Sajid Malik, of the Interfaith Forum, the Bishop of Jarrow, the Very Reverend Alan Smithson, and Israeli peace activist Rabbi Moshe.
One of the organisers, Barry Gills, said: "Opposition to the bombing is immense. The aid agencies have confirmed that thousands are threatened with starvation this winter unless the bombing is halted so that food supplies can be brought in.
