A HORSE racing trophy is expected to be sold for more than £300,000 at Christie's, in London, later this month.

The Richmond Cup, also known as Her Majesty's Gold Cup or the York Gold Cup, was cast in the reign of Queen Anne, in the early 1700s.

Echoing the Newmarket traditions of King Charles II and King William III, 100 guineas was put up for Yorkshire Plate races, with the first recorded at Bramham Moor in 1702.

But another was run at Richmond in 1706, and the Richmond Cup was awarded to winner, Sir Ralph Milbanke. Since then, the trophy has been owned by MP Michael Noble and, more recently, Lord Rothschild, father of the current Lord Rothschild.

The cup will be auctioned on Tuesday, November 20.
