Junior round-up

Billingham Falcons won for the first time this season in the English Pee-Wee (Under-14) North 'A' League. They defeated rivals Whitley Bay Mohawks 5-0 at the Forum ice arena on Saturday. It was the first match played at the Forum since September 22 due to the problems with the ice.

Falcons took the lead through their captain Robert Dowd after nine minutes and this was doubled with a powerplay goal from Paul Smith.

Whitley did not have too much time at the start of the final period to cut the deficit because Billingham were awarded a penalty shot only 45 seconds in. This was duly converted by Dowd to put Falcons 3-0 ahead. Jamie Kitching and Dowd for his hat-trick market completed the scoring.

Twenty four hours later Mohawks played host to Sunderland Commanches at Hillheads and won 2-1 in a very entertaining match. Sunderland were ahead through David Holland and just seconds later Mohawks were level through Daniel Murdy. Mohawks found Commanches' netminder Mark Thurman difficult to beat and it was not until the final minute of the first period that they took the lead, Ben Moore putting his side ahead.

Billingham Bears suffered a 6-2 defeat at Telford Rockets in English Junior (Under-16) North 'A' League. Bears were trailing 0-1 at the first break and had conceded another two before James Udell replied for Bears' first goal at 22.05.

Jamie Pattison brought Bears right back into the game with a short-handed goal two minutes later.

Telford took advantage of powerplays to add three further goals for victory.

Sunderland Arrows went down 10-5 at Altrincham Jets. In the same competition Jets were 3-0 ahead before Liam Telfer reduced the deficit on the powerplay. The three-goal lead was restored when Michael Allinson tucked away Arrows' second. Allison hit a straight hat-trick as Sunderland trailed 4-6 going into the final period. Telfer scored his second goal of the game in the 43rd minute. Arrows' Shaun Kippin went for an early shower after receiving a five-plus game misconduct penalty for roughing at 24.49.

Billingham Wildcats were beaten 6-2 at home by Guildford Lightning in the Women's Premier League action. Vicki Mason put Wildcats ahead only for Guildford to take a 3-1 lead. Emma Gourley struck Billingham's second after 32 minutes.

Guildford wrapped up victory with three goals in the final period.

Guildford the previous night hosted Sunderland Scorpions and won 3-0. Netminder Vicky Robbins was the hero keeping a 22-shot shut-out.

Nottingham Vipers were second best against Scorpions on Sunday as they were brushed aside 6-0. Heather McDermott and Jayne McClelland scored a minute apart to give Sunderland a 2-0 lead. Nicky Pattinson added the only goal of the middle period. Lynsey Emmerson (2) and Kerry Dunn completed the scoring in the third period.

Whitley Bay Squaws lost 14-2 at Hillheads against visiting Sheffield Shadows. In Women's Division One, North Sheffield were 5-0 ahead when Sara Christie got Squaws' first reply. Sophie Bell grabbed a second a minute later. Claire Oldfield, Christie (2) and Leanne Nolan were on target in the second, but Sheffield had hit seven to lead 13-6. Oldfield got the seventh.

Whitley Bay Mischiefs lost 5-3 to Kingston River Rats in English Under-10 North League. Whitley did not have enough players to start the match and had to borrow a Kingtston player. Steven Worrall, Liam Brown and Jack Connon were the Mischiefs' scorers.
