A NORTH YORKSHIRE golfer made a big impression while competing at one of the world's most famous golf courses recently.
Big-hitting Ian Smith, from Ainderby Steeple, near Bedale, won the longest drive award in the Chrysler Golf Challenge on the Ailsa championship course at Turnberry in Scotland.
The course, a regular venue for the Open Championship, was hosting the grand final of the competition, in which Smith and fellow Bedale golf club members John Webster, Robert Payne and William Barclay represented Yorkshire's John Gill Ltd Chrysler Jeep dealers.
The foursome had reached the final, along with eight other teams, after winning performances in local and regional competitions.
More than 2,000 competitors had originally signed up for the competition, co-sponsored by TaylorMade-adidas
