A BLOCK of flats overlooking Richmond's historic Temple Grounds could be given the go-ahead after architects reworked the design.

Conservation groups, including English Heritage, had resisted the original plans for six flats next to the former convent, in Reeth Road.

The watchdog organisation had been concerned that the building would have a detrimental impact on the market town's architectural heritage, a view supported by Richmondshire District Council, which requested the proposals be revised.

The new blueprints are tabled at a meeting at the authority's offices next week - and a report recommends they be approved.

This time, Carlbury Developments is suggesting a block of five flats, with a garage block next door, adding to the 37 new properties already built at the old convent.

Comments from English Heritage, the Countryside Agency and the Richmond and District Civic Society indicate all three organisations now find the proposals broadly acceptable.

However, the final decision rests with the district council's planning committee, which meets at Swale House at 6.30pm, on Tuesday.
