HEALTH professionals, support and voluntary workers have picked up awards for their work to improve patient care.

The second Northern and Yorkshire NHS annual good practice awards took place at Harrogate International Conference Centre yesterday.

NHS chief executive Nigel Crisp presented the eight winners with their prizes - a certificate and a £10,000 bursary for each team. The money can be used to pay for study days or further to develop services.

The awards are part of a programme to modernise the NHS in the Northern and Yorkshire region.

It consists of a number of programmes to improve services for patients suffering from a range of conditions, including coronary heart disease, cancer and mental health problems.

The North-East winners included the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for its radiotherapy evenings for patients and carers, Gateshead NHS Trust, for improving patient access in rheumatology, and the Hartlepool Multi Link Team for older people.
