FORMER Tory leader William Hague took a break from helping to plot the Government's next battering to present a fish and chip shop with an award yesterday.

Steven and Jenny Barker, of Richmond, North Yorkshire, can boast that they are among the best in the country after winning a Sea Fish Industry Authority Sea Fish Fryer Quality Award, given to only a select few each year.

"This quality award is much deserved," said Mr Hague. "There are over 10,000 fish restaurants in Britain and only 300 have this award. It is not given out lightly.''

Mr and Mrs Barker took over the shop at the beginning of the year and have worked hard to meet more than 200 criteria to qualify for the award.

"It is a great start for the new business. We would never have achieved so much so quickly without the help and determination of all our staff," said Mr Barker
