AN annual service to remember those from a Redcar college who died fighting in the two World Wars took place yesterday next to a memorial set up to honour them.

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Vilma Collins, the British Legion and staff and students at Redcar and Cleveland College joined together for the service at the war memorial in the college grounds, which is dedicated to the staff and students who lost their lives.

The original war memorial was erected in 1920 at the old Coatham School, which later became the Sir William Turner School while the Second World War memorial plaque is in the entrance to the sixth form centre.

College principal Alan Old said: "The remembrance service is a significant part of the college's year, when we honour the lives of those ex-pupils and colleagues who fought and died in two World Wars.

"It is a tradition which has been carried on through many changes in the life of the college and has now become an event which strengthens our links with the local community."

Organisers are keen to find out more about the people and the families behind the names on the plaques.

Anyone with information should contact the college
