A Hakan Mild goal just before half-time denied Sven Goran Eriksson an emotional victory over his native Sweden as England were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Eriksson, fielding an experimental line-up, started with Middlesbrough defender Gareth Southgate and Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, whilst the predominantly right-footed Jamie Carragher played at left-back.

There was also a starting place for Black Cats target Trevor Sinclair.

Captain David Beckham had given the hosts the lead on the half hour from the penalty spot.

French referee Claude Colombo surprised everyone when he blew for a penalty after West Ham star Sinclair appeared to lose his footing on the edge of the six-yard area.

Perhaps justice was done just moments before half-time as Hakan Mild pounced on Nigel Martyn's spilled save from Erik Edman's free-kick to earn the Swede's a share of the spoils.
