A CENTURY of tradition has ended with the closure of Spennymoor's old police station.

The imposing building in Dundas Street has been used by the police since 1901. It also served as a magistrates' court and once provided living accommodation for the town inspector and sergeant.

But yesterday, a new police station opened in the town, next to Spennymoor Leisure Centre.

Chief Inspector Terry Johnson said: "We can't complain about the old station, it has lasted 100 years. But the new complex is in a much better position and should be easier for the public to find. With better car parking, security and storage, it is an improvement in almost every way. Hopefully, it will give us the same sterling service we have had from the old station."

Not everyone has welcomed the change. Spennymoor town councillors have branded the station a £2m, part-time white elephant, because it will be closed from midnight to 8am, to free an officer from desk duty for other operations.

Instead, a telephone link will enable night-time callers to speak to police at Newton Aycliffe, who can allow people into the lobby at Spennymoor in emergencies
