POLICE are concerned that youths using a building site as a playground could be injured.

Cleveland Police have received numerous reports about youngsters loitering at the site of the former South Park Sixth Form College, in Normanby, Teesside, which is currently being developed into housing.

Large groups of youngsters are gathering at the site at night and have managed to get inside on several occasions.

Jim Maidens, site manager for developer Wimpey Homes, alerted police to the problem because he was afraid that one of the youngsters could end up being injured.

The site is not lit at night and, because of the excavation work that is being carried out, there are several large holes around the area.

PC Andrew Dark said: "Although the youngsters are causing a nuisance by hanging around near the site, we are more concerned about their safety.

"A building site is potentially dangerous at any time, but even more so at night when it is in darkness.

"We hope that, by alerting these youths to the problem, they might take notice and save someone from being injured."
