EXPRESS Dairies plans to close its dairy at Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, on Teesside with the loss of 118 jobs.

The closure is a result of on-going rationalistion of supply in the retail sector of the milk market.

Only last month, Express announced the loss of 109 jobs with the closure of its Durham Dairy bottling plant at Langley Moor, near Durham City.

Leicester-based Express, which only acquired the Durham site in 1999, announced the closure as part of an overhaul of its glass bottling facilities.

The group is to sell its liquid milk business to Associated Co-operative Creameries for £5m and a company spokesperson said the sale would result in the proposed closure of the Durham Dairy, subject to a 90-day consultation period.

Express plans to close its Linthorpe Dairy by March, subject to the outcome of consultation with the workforce.

Peter Kirkpatrick, group executive of Express Dairies, said: "We regret the need to make this announcement and we will give our full support to everyone affected to help them find alternative employment."
